The ASSURE Model
ASSURE model is the procedural guide for the teacher to integrate his/her course by using media and technology effectively at the same time in class. ASSURE model includes,

Analyze learners:
I have learnt that the teacher must match between the characteristic of the learner and content of the methods, media and materials. Because of this reason the teacher need to analyze his/her learners. There are several criteria to analyze the learner, these are
  • General characteristics: consider age, grade level, job or position, and cultural and socioeconomic factors of the learners
  • Specific entry competencies:  knowledge and skills that learners either possess or lack: prerequisite skills, target skills, and attitudes
  • Learning styles: the spectrum of psychological traits that affect how students perceive and respond to different stimuli, such as anxiety, aptitude, visual or auditory preference , motivation and so on.

State Objectives
Objectives are stated to make an appropriate selection of media and materials, to create a learning environment in which the objectives can be reached and to help ensure proper evaluation.
Things to keep in mind as we  write the  objectives are:

Ø      Focus on the learner, not the teacher

Ø      Use behaviors that reflect real world concerns

Ø      Objectives are descriptions of the learning outcomes and are written using the ABCD format.
      Audience:
Who is the audience? Specifies the learner(s) for whom the objective is intended.
      Behavior:
What do you want them to do? The behavior or capability needs to be demonstrated as learner performance, an observable, measurable behavior, or a real-world skill.  Use an action verb from the helpful verbs list if you have difficulty doing this.
      Condition:
Under what circumstances or conditions are the learners to demonstrate the skill being taught? Be sure to include equipment, tools, aids, or references the learner may or may not use, and/or special environmental conditions in which the learner has to perform.
      Degree:
How well do you want them to demonstrate their mastery? Degree to which the new skill must be mastered or the criterion for acceptable performance (include time limit, range of accuracy, proportion of correct responses required, and/or qualitative standards.)

Select, modify, design Methods, Media, & Materials
The selection process has three steps, first deciding on the appropriate method for the given learning task, second choosing a media format that is suitable for carrying out the method and thirdly selecting, modifying or designing specific materials within the media format.

When selecting media it is important to think of the following ;

Ø      Media should be selected on the basis of student need.
Ø      We must consider the total learning situation.
Ø      Should follow learning objectives.
Ø      Must be appropriate for the teaching format.
Ø      Should be consistent with the students' capabilities and learning styles.
Ø      Should be chosen objectively.
Ø      Should be selected in order to best meet the learning outcomes.
Ø      No single medium is the total solution.
Ø      Does it match the curriculum?
Ø      Is it accurate and current?  etc
Utilize Methods, Media, & Materials
Once I have selected the right methods, media and materials then I have to plan how I am going to implement the media and materials. For each type of media and/or materials listed under Select, modify, and design I have describe in detail how I am are going to implement them into my lesson to help my learners meet the lesson's objective.

There is “5 Ps” procedure for the utilization of media and materials; preview the materials, prepare the materials, prepare the environment, prepare the learners and provide the learning experience.
Require Learner Participation
Another important thing I have found as a teacher are going to get each learner "actively and individually involved in the lesson.  Ex:  games, group work, presentations, skit, etc.
Remember that the days of sage on the stage are gone. Our role in the classroom today is one of a guide on the side and students, especially with technology connected lessons, need to experience learning. All activities should provide opportunities to manipulate the information and allow time for practice during the demonstration of the skill.

To be effective, instruction should require active mental engagement by learners. The activities should allow learners to practice the knowledge or skills and to give feedback.

Evaluate and Revise
After delivering a lesson it is very important to find out wether or not the lesson objectives were met.  Were the media and the instruction effective?

So here we have to Evaluate student’s performance:

The evaluation should match the objective. Some objectives can be adequately assessed with a pen and paper test. If the objectives call for demonstrating a process, creating a product, or developing an attitude, the evaluation will frequently require observing the behavior in action.

It is also important to evaluate the media components, where they effective?

Some of the benefits of Using ASSURE Model include
·         More detailed; in ASSURE model you need to give details about learners, methods, media and materials, and evaluation
·         One-on-one interest; you need to make one-on-one relation between students to analyze them easily.
·         Promotes Creativity; you need use your creativity while doing appropriate selections.
·         Early preparation; you need to prepare this procedure before the lesson and you can be ready for the lesson earlier.
·         Revise chance; you may revise the procedure and make appropriate changes according to the critics after the lesson.

I strongly believe when technology in the classroom is very important because as a future teacher, I feel we need to find different ways to motivate our students to learning. The ASSURE model was easy to follow and I am happy with how it provides information for me to present my “All about Me” unit plan.

The ASSURE model is a great way to develop a lesson plan. From now on, I will use the ASSURE Model as a guide to plan and create lesson plans for future classes.
